    Transport and magnetic properties of the diluted magnetic semiconductors Sb 1.98– x V 0.02 Cr x Te 3 and Sb 1.984– y V 0.016 Mn y Te 3

We report on electrical transport and magnetic properties of quaternary single crystals of Sb 1.98– x V 0.02 Cr x Te 3 and Sb 1.984– y V 0.016 Mn y Te 3 with x ranging from 0 to 0.022 and y ranging from 0 to 0.034 over temperatures from 2 K to 300 K. Ternary crystals Sb 2– z V z Te 3 were reported to have rather small magnetization in the ferromagnetic state due to low spin of vanadium ions. Therefore, we attempted to combine vanadium with other high-spin elements hoping to enhance both magnetization and the Curie temperature of these diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) based on the Sb 2 Te 3 matrix. While the Curie temperatures of Sb 1.98– x V 0.02 Cr x Te 3 samples are comparable to that of Sb 1.98 V 0.02 Te 3 , we observe a significant enhancement in the remanent magnetization when Cr is co-doped. In contrast, adding Mn to Sb 1.984 V 0.016 Te 3 leads to a decrease in the Curie temperature and, at higher concentrations, to a complete suppression of ferromagnetism. Since Mn enhances the concentration of holes, its presence might seem favorable to the formation of the ferromagnetic order. In reality, the destruction of ferromagnetism in samples containing Mn is likely a result of the antiferromagnetically coupled Mn-ion pairs. (© 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The ACS Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters XIV: Bayesian Single-Population Analysis of 69 Globular Clusters

    Get PDF
We use Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging from the ACS Treasury Survey to determine fits for single population isochrones of 69 Galactic globular clusters. Using robust Bayesian analysis techniques, we simultaneously determine ages, distances, absorptions, and helium values for each cluster under the scenario of a \single stellar population on model grids with solar ratio heavy element abundances. The set of cluster parameters is determined in a consistent and reproducible manner for all clusters using the Bayesian analysis suite BASE-9. Our results are used to re-visit the age-metallicity relation. We find correlations with helium and several other parameters such as metallicity, binary fraction, and proxies for cluster mass. The helium abundances of the clusters are also considered in the context of CNO abundances and the multiple population scenario

Recent developments in German corporate governance.

This paper provides an overview of the German corporate governance system. We review the governance role of large shareholders, creditors, the product market and the supervisory board. We also discuss the importance of mergers and acquisitions, the market in block trades, and the lack of a hostile takeover market. Given that Germany is often referred to as a bank-based economy, we pay particular attention to the role of the universal banks (Hausbanken). We show that the German system is characterised by a market for partial corporate control, large shareholders and bank/creditor monitoring, a two-tier (management and supervisory) board with co-determination between shareholders and employees on the supervisory board, a disciplinary product-market, and corporate governance regulation largely based on EU directives but with deep roots in the German codes and legal doctrine. Another important feature of the German system is its corporate governance efficiency criterion which is focused on the maximisation of stakeholder value rather than shareholder value. However, the German corporate governance system has experienced many important changes over the last decade. First, the relationship between ownership or control concentration and profitability has changed over time. Second, the pay-for-performance relation is influenced by large shareholder control: in firms with controlling blockholders and when a universal bank is simultaneously an equity- and debtholder, the pay-for-performance relation is lower than in widely-held firms or blockholder-controlled firms. Third, since 1995 several major regulatory initiatives (including voluntary codes) have increased transparency and accountability

Quantitation of motion perception in the digits: A psychophysical study in normal human subjects

Threshold perception of motion of the digits was obtained in 14 normal subjects. The metacarpophalangeal joint of the index and the fifth finger of each hand and the metatarsophalangeal joint of the hallux of each foot were passively moved up and down with respect to a horizontal plane defined by the palmar or plantar surface. The motion was sinusoidal at frequencies of 0.5 and 5.0 Hz. A modified von BÉkÉsy paradigm similar to that used in audiometry was utilized to yield threshold levels of motion sensation. There was little difference in the thresholds obtained for the different joints. The difference between high- and low-frequency stimulation, however, was significant ( p 0.001): the 0.5 Hz threshold was found to range from 0.8 to 1.0 degree, whereas the 5.0 Hz threshold varied from 0.4 to 0.6 degree. It is thought that motion sense is largely dependent on joint receptor contributions, but muscle and cutaneous receptors may also contribute to this proprioceptive sensation.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/50290/1/410020404_ftp.pd
